剧集的故事主要发生在某个不定的历史年代，地点是虚构的邻近京城的下河县里的“清明酒家”。故事围绕精明能干的孙掌柜，自命不凡的张郎，油滑机灵的刘三儿和孙掌柜嫁不出来的女儿如花展开，同时带入他们身边的形形色色的人物，如常常来“清明酒家”走动的下河县师爷苏东，时不时来传传小道消息的“退休干部”周员外……。Two young men (Jon Cryer, Rick Stear) who have been friends since early childhood decide to go on a trip to find a third friend (Rafael Baez) who has long since disappeared. Stories they have heard indicate that the friend has been seen in an apparently rambling, incoherent state at Coney Island. Their trip leads them to a number of adventures involving the otherworld-like life...。
