1949年1月，北平在三次和谈之后宣告和平解放。本片以此为背景，讲述了北平城内的共产党地下工作者为执行一项必须完成的使命，与反派斗智斗勇，游走在生死边缘，最终力挽狂澜、扭转局势的故事。。上世纪初，军阀混战，世道离乱。作为连接大千世界的重要枢纽，十里洋场更是一个鱼龙混杂、黑白颠倒的所在。生活在最低层的码头工人林四海（刘家辉饰）终日劳苦，不见出头天，但是脑筋活络的他抓住一个千载难逢的机会。他凭借三寸不烂之舌帮助军阀出特派专员郑志成（王戎饰）脱险，从而得以脱离底层，成为一名警察，后凭着脑瓜灵光成为局长的副官。欲望已被勾起，林四海无法停止脚步，他寻机拉拢警长下水，自己则成为黑白两道通吃的头面人物，与大家姐梅宝（楚湘云饰）雄霸码头，风头无量。正所谓天下大乱，遂使竖子成名本片根据江之南的原著改编。。The subtitle of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet’s first feature, from 1965, “Only Violence Helps Where Violence Reigns,” suggests the fierce political program evoked by their rigorous aesthetic. The pretext of the film, set in Cologne, is Heinrich Böll’s novel “Billiards at Half Past Nine,” which they strip down to a handful of stark events and film with a confrontational angularity akin to Bartók’s music that adorns the soundtrack. The subtlest of cues accompany the story’s complex flashbacks. The middle-aged Robert Fähmel tells a young hotel bellhop of persecutions under the Third Reich| his elderly father, Heinrich, an architect famed for a local abbey, recalls the militarism of the First World War, when his wife, Johanna, incurred trouble for insulting the Kaiser. A third-generation Fähmel is considering architecture, just as the exiled brother of Robert’s late wife, returns, only to be met by their former torturer, now a West German official taking part in a celebratory parade of war veterans. Straub and Huillet make the layers of history live in the present tense, which they judge severely. The tamped-down acting and the spare, tense visual rhetoric suggest a state of moral crisis as well as the response—as much in style as in substance—that it demands.。
